I work as a TypeWell transcriber/captionist in the Access Services Department of Rochester Institute of Technology/National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY. When I started captioning in 2004, using C-Print software, there were 11 of us. There are now over 50 of us working full-time. We're still growing, and the number of requests keep increasing each year, largely due to the prevalence of cochlear implants.
In 2013 a few of us trained on TypeWell software to research its viability as an option for us. I absolutely loved it! Since then more than half of our department has made the software switch. However, it remains a personal choice, with our managers fully supporting each current employee's decision for preferred software.
In addition to providing live captioning for classes and special events, I get the privilege of helping new hires acclimate to our department, our campus, and their new assignments. Mentoring is one of my favorite parts of the job!
