The WVU Captioner Mentorship Program provides TypeWell-qualified transcribers with a unique opportunity to hone their professional skills in real college classes. This program is open to new TypeWell transcribers, as well as experienced transcribers in search of professional development and networking.
Over the course of 15 weeks, mentees will work remotely from home, providing real-time transcribing services for WVU students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and may be assigned to provide services solo or as part of a team.
Mentees will be assigned 3 to 4 classes per week. Unlike most agencies, the WVU Captioner Mentorship Program also compensates mentees for pre-class preparation and post-class editing, in addition to time spent in class. In total, mentees should expect to work between 13.5 and 18 billable hours each week.
Mentees will also gain valuable University-level transcribing experience by working alongside seasoned transcribers, and they will participate in regular debriefing sessions where they receive individualized feedback from trained mentors.
Applicants will be required to provide a brief letter of interest, resume, and valid TypeWell Educational History as proof of training.
For additional information on the program, please contact the WVU Captioning & Interpreting Team at 304-293-0458.
Mentees will responsible for maintaining their own TypeWell software license, computer equipment, and internet connection.
